Selecting objects in Illustrator allows one to move objects. Without selecting an object, you cannot move the object. The transformation tool allows you to move the selected object into a fixed position. Aligning objects can be done by selecting properties and clicking the position one wants to align the object. Using grids and guides can be useful for an extra precution if you want the picture to be straight or symmetrical.
